Abstract
Epidemiology

Pituitary adenomas account for up to 10% of all intracranial neoplasms. The most common functioning tumors are those secreting growth hormone (GH) that cause acromegaly, prolactin (PRL) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) that cause Cushing's disease.

Etiopathogeny

Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors of the anterior pituitary. Most of them present as sporadic but they may be associated to hereditary syndromes.

Clinical manifestations

Pituitary adenomas produce symptoms related to the pituitary hormone secreted in excess. They also produce symptoms due to mass effect and secondary hypopituitarism.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is based on hormonal tests and radiological imaging.

Treatment

Surgery, drug therapy and radiotherapy are the mainstay of treatment.
