Abstract

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, characterised by chronic inflammation of the airway, defined by the presence of respiratory symptoms such as dyspnoea, cough and wheezing that vary over time, and varying airflow obstruction. It is considered a syndrome with different phenotypes, with common clinical manifestations of probably different aetiologies. Diagnosis requires the presence of compatible symptoms, together with objective measurement of lung function. Airflow obstruction must be recorded as well as significant variation in lung function. Current treatment is based on controlling the disease. The essential pillar of treatment is inhaled corticosteroids, combined with long-acting beta2 agonists. We base treatment of refractory asthma on the different endotypes of the disease; the best results have been achieved with the TH-2 profile.
