Abstract

This update presents the main geriatric syndromes, specifically cognitive deterioration, falls, immobility, incontinence and frailty.

These syndromes share a series of characteristics: their high prevalence in people of advanced age, the loss of personal autonomy and quality of life they cause and the possibility of treating them clinically, especially in the early forms. We provide a brief definition of the concept of each syndrome and the instruments used in their diagnosis.

In some cases, treatment is principally drug-based and in others, management is based on prevention or other methods, such as cognitive or behavioural therapy.
