Abstract

Frailty is considered a clinical condition where the patient is at greater risk of adverse events, defined as a greater risk of disability, dependence, morbidity, mortality, institutionalisation and hospitalisation. Frailty is a dynamic concept, and as such “the greater the frailty, the greater the risk of an adverse event”, therefore its detection will enable more appropriate decision-making to suit the features of the elderly person. Practical tests are the tools recommended in primary and specialist care to detect frailty. Monitoring instrumental activities of daily living is important in the clinic to detect functional decline promptly. And if frailty is suspected, a multidimensional clinical assessment is recommended, or a comprehensive geriatric assessment for established or more advanced cases, to confirm frailty, assess needs and implement appropriate, individualised intervention plans.
