Abstract

Different diseases can lead to the development of portal hypertension, with liver cirrhosis being the most common. Recently, the term “porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder” has been coined to define diseases other than cirrhosis that produce histological changes in the periportal and sinusoidal vasculature and which eventually lead to the onset of portal hypertension in the absence of significant hepatic fibrosis. It is essential to perform a liver biopsy in order to diagnose this condition, since it allows for detecting histological changes typical of the disease, such as nodular regenerative hyperplasia, obliterative portal venopathy, or incomplete septal fibrosis. To date, there is no specific treatment available for the prevention or cure of this disease. Therapeutic tools are aimed at preventing and treating complications arising from portal hypertension.
